About Me

Welcome teachers, parents, and reading enthusiasts! I’m Meika, a former teacher turned stay-at-home mom who has a passion for high quality children’s books. In my career as an educator, I have been a preschool teacher, Kindergarten and 1st grade teacher, and a reading specialist for grades K-3. No matter which grade I found myself teaching, my favorite part of the school day was always my read-alouds. A carefully chosen read-aloud can teach a child so much and open up their mind to a whole new world of ideas (cue Aladdin song), so I diligently planned my read-alouds just as thoughtfully as I would plan a math or science lesson. As an educator of young children who were just beginning to navigate their place in a social world and see beyond their own ego-centrism, I also wanted to use my read-alouds as an opportunity to teach them important social skills, such as making friends, treating others respectfully, and regulating their big emotions.

I hope I can be a resource for parents and teachers who are looking for ways to enrich their children’s learning through read-alouds. When I was a teacher, my students’ parents often asked me how they could support their children’s reading skills at home, so in addition to book recommendations and extension activities, this page also includes some suggestions for how you can foster stronger literacy skills with the right support and guiding questions. Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoy reading these books as much as I do!
